Manchester City

The blue side of Manchester was formed in 1880 as St Mark’s to pave the way for the idea of Arthur Connell to create a football club for the community of the church in Manchester.

What the current Manchester City depicts as a successful world power regarding popularity and achievement was different in association with their older history. After the club changed its location to the spacious Hyde Road, they were graced with an earned promotion to the English First Division in 1899. The club saw some ups and downs as the main stand of the Hyde Road fire of 1923 forced them to move to the historic Maine Road, which also gave them a glimmer of hope with FA Cup trophies in 1904 and 1934.

In 1934 City broke the English attendance record of 84,569 (which still stays intact); they won their first top-flight title in 1936/37 and got relegated the season after. Their last first-division title came in 1967/68 before the takeover.

Manchester City’s fortunes changed after the Sheikh Mansour UAE takeover in 2008, and since then, the citizens have never looked back; the club spent over £500 million on players and changed the name of their stadium to Etihad Stadium in 2011-  the same year of their first Premier League Title with the greatest PL moment of Aguerooo, five more PL Titles followed with them breaking the PL record of collecting 100 points in the 2017/18 season.

Playing Style and Tactics

The club always preferred an attacking style of play with a ball-playing center forward contributing the most amount of goals conversions based on a progressive possession build up to the final third, which made the Argentinian Sergio Kun Aguero an all-time leading City goalscorer with 389 goals scored during his tenure in the club.

Under Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini, and Pep Guardiola, that attacking prowess has been further enhanced, as the club is consistently the league's top scorer and across other top five leagues.

Current Squad

Infamous for his tiki-taka style of possession-based tactics, The Spaniard Pep Guardiola always preferred a 4-3-3 with an extraordinary zonal play where he likes to draw lines based on the positioning of each player to play in triangles making the progression of the ball easier and pacier to mauver up the pitch.

Starting in goal, as always, is first-choice Brazilian Ederson, covered by the four-man defense with Kyle Walker at Right Back, Ruden Dias, and Nathan Ake as the center-back pairing, and Bernardo Silva as the newly adjusted makeshift left back. The midfield three consists of Rodri as the defensive mid, sometimes making a double pivot with Walker joining him, allowing both Ilkay Gündogan and Kevin De Bruyne to progress forward and unlock the attack with their skillset. The front three are a 100 million purchase from Aston Villa Jack Grealish and English champion with Leicester City  Riyad Mahrez on the wings and Viking Erling Haaland, who in his first season itself is en route to breaking both the PL hattrick and most goals scored in a single season record.

The remaining squad members are

Goalkeepers - Stefan Ortega and Scott Carson

Defenders - Aymeric Laporte, John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Sergio Gomez, and Rico Lewis

Midfielders - Kalvin Philips, Cole Palmer, and Maximo Perrone

Forwards - Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez

The resurgence of the citizens has been a series of domestic dominance based on their recent history of domestic success with EFL Cups and 4 PL titles in the last five seasons, making them a force to be reckoned with. Although their fluid football has made its mark in England, their main target of the UCL title is still under high threat, reaching the final only once and losing that to their domestic rivals Chelsea. Yet, they are confident with a great squad depth making it more feasible and possible for them to go again for European glory under Pep Guardiola.
